Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a medical treatment combining two medications: Oxygen and Atmospheric Pressure. The treatments will elevate the circulating concentration of dissolved oxygen in the bloodstream to levels 10-15 times higher than those achievable at sea level. This improves the body's capacity to heal wounds.
Each treatment takes place in a state-of-the-art chamber where the patient breathes nearly 100% medical grade oxygen at increased atmospheric pressure that simulates scuba diving at depths of 33-45 feet of sea water. Pressurization of the chamber allows for increased circulating oxygen to saturate into the bloodstream and inevitably the tissues of the body, improving the body’s ability to heal.
Hyperbaric treatment is approved by the American Medical Association (AMA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as well as governed by the Undersea Hyperbaric Medial Society (UHMS). This therapeutic approach has been utilized for over six decades to treat various medical conditions.
Benefits of HBOT
-
Increased oxygen delivery to the tissues of the body.
-
Formation of new blood vessels – Angiogenesis.
-
Reduces swelling / edema.
-
Increased oxygen tension in the tissues.
-
Creates an environment that is uninhabitable for infectious bacteria.
-
Synergistically works with antibiotics to eradicate infections.
-
Stimulates new bone growth.
-
Promotes progenitor stem cell migration to the wounded area for improved long-term healing.
Positive Experience
HBOT is non-invasive and painless. When in the clear acrylic tube/chamber, patients are monitored and supported in a compassionate environment by our Certified Hyperbaric Technicians (CHT).
Patients lay down while watching movies, listening to music, or resting during the treatment. Patients are never alone and can speak with our CHT at any time through a two-way intercom.
Preparation
All patients will receive a comprehensive consultation to review medical history, current medical conditions, and dictate if wound care, hyperbaric oxygen therapy or both modalities are indicated.
If HBOT is indicated, an extensive risk stratification will be done to rule out any contraindications. All patients will receive instructions and have all questions answered prior to their first scheduled hyperbaric oxygen treatment.
A detailed discussion will occur reviewing precautions and instructions for maximum safety during each treatment.
Duration
Treatments will last 90 minutes once the prescribed treatment pressure has been reached. Approximately 10-15 minutes is usually required to achieve the prescribed treatment pressure.
Our providers will determine the appropriate protocol per patient depending on the medical history and concurrent treatment indication. This is evidence-based medicine with an individualized approach to care.
